Mahāparinirvāṇa Day

Mahāyāna Buddhists observe Mahāparinirvāṇa Day, also known as Nirvana Day, at the time of the second full moon in the lunar calendar, in remembrance of the Buddha’s passing into Mahāparinirvāṇa. On this day, temples and centers read the Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra, which recounts the Buddha’s final days, and engage in chanting and meditation on the impermanence of all phenomena. Japanese Buddhists celebrate Nirvana Day according to the solar calendar, every year on February 15.
