Hanamatsuri, “flower festival”, Buddha’s birthday

Japanese Buddhists celebrate Buddha’s birthday according to the solar calendar on April 8. People gather in temples and centers, listen to teachings, and share a festive meal. The bathing of the Buddha child is a ceremony where each participant, in turn, pours water over a statue representing the Buddha as a child, while wishing happiness and freedom from suffering for all. The Finnish Buddhist Union celebrates Buddhism Day on this occasion.
