Kathina, Pavāranā, Sangha Day

On the ninth full moon day of the lunar calendar, the traditional three-month rainy season retreat in Theravāda monasteries comes to an end. Time to honor monks and one’s own parents. Temples and homes are illuminated with many candles and colorful lights. Pavāranā marks the beginning of the Kathina season, during which laypeople offer new robes to monks and nuns and make donations to the temple. Kathina celebrations continue until the next full moon day.
