Vesak, ”Buddha Day” (Japan)



Celebration of the full moon of the Lunar month of Vesak. It commemorates the birth of Buddha Shakyamuni, and in Theravada and Tibetan Buddhism also the enlightenment and death ‘Mahaparinirvana’. People gather in temples and centres, participate in ceremonies, meditate and celebrate. ‘The Bathing of the Buddha’ is a ceremony in Theravada and Mahayana. In this ceremony, all participants pour water over the statue of the Buddha-child in turns and wish for happiness and freedom from suffering for everyone.
